The Band of Angels is the earliest established angel investment group in the United States, initially formed in 1994. Serving as a formal organization, it comprises over 150 members who are largely former or current executives in the high tech industry. These members actively invest their resources, both time and capital, into emerging, innovative startup companies. Over its history, the Band of Angels has funded more than 400 startups, with such investments leading to 97 profitable mergers and acquisitions as well as 17 initial public offerings. The group predominantly invests in tech-driven markets such as software, IT & TMT, biotech, business solutions, fintech, hardware, retail, IoT, cleantech, A.I. & big data, healthtech, blockchain, analytics, cloud services, impact sectors, medical devices, healthcare, mobility, nanotechnology, and consumer products. Their investment focus is on companies that possess a strong team, proprietary technology, and access to sizable market opportunities. Typically, they do not invest in real estate, restaurants, retail, or other non-tech funds. The investment range for the Band falls between $300,000 to $750,000, targeting seed stage ventures where total fundraising efforts are between $500K to $2M. The selection process for investment involves a rigorous review of numerous companies each month, narrowing the list to a few that are invited to pitch at their monthly meetings in Silicon Valley. Investees benefit from the extensive knowledge and network of the Band members, often receiving guidance post-investment, which can sometimes include a Band member joining the investee's Board. Members of the Band of Angels benefit from diversified deal flow, collective due diligence, and shared experiences to guide investment decisions. The group values confidentiality, collaboration, and a harmonious culture among its investors.
