They focus on removing barriers that impede social advancement and are committed to championing innovation and investing in transformative lives.

As part of their efforts, Pivotal Ventures seeks out bold solutions in various areas, including caregiving, centering women and girls of color, mental health for young people, paid family and medical leave, women's political power, and women in tech innovation. They leverage a multifaceted approach to maximize their impact, utilizing investments, philanthropy, partnerships, and advocacy.

Their investment arm is ahead of the curve, where they ask their partners to weigh in on venture capital trends, highlighting the importance of staying current in the venture capital landscape. Additionally, Melinda French Gates has made significant financial commitments, such as her $150 million pledge to help women thrive at work and a $1 billion commitment through 2026 to further advance women's power on a global scale.

Since its founding in 2015, Pivotal Ventures has employed different funding mechanisms to achieve their mission—ranging from venture capital to advocacy funding and philanthropic grants. In 2022, Melinda expanded the organization's reach by forming Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to support the organization's philanthropic endeavors. This foundation is sited to facilitate a flexible approach to driving impact.
