Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation (KHIC) is an investment firm established in 1968 with the goal of fostering economic growth and employment opportunities within Southeastern Kentucky. Initially focusing on a nine-county region, KHIC expanded its services to a total of 22 counties by 2003. They are dedicated to sustaining employment in the area through strategic investments and offer various forms of assistance to businesses, such as management support, aid in developing financial packages, and guidance in industrial development. KHIC has significantly impacted the local economy by assisting 220 businesses with financing totalling approximately $178 million, thereby contributing to the creation of over 9,900 jobs. The fund's investment options range from as low as $500 to as high as $10 million. Additionally, the organization provides loan programs and operates The KHIC Energy Boot Camp—a rigorous, performance-focused entrepreneurial training program that includes mentoring. Moreover, KHIC boasts the Business Innovation & Growth Center, the first business accelerator in the state with LEED certification. This facility spans 9,600 square feet and includes space designated for product development, as well as office and laboratory areas designed to support local entrepreneurs. Through their involvement, KHIC estimates support for 16 businesses over five years, aiming for the generation of 127 new jobs and an anticipation of $6 million in private investments. Their investment activities focus on multiple industries, reflecting a diverse and adaptive approach to regional economic development.
