Broadwing Communications, originally known as Tower Communications Systems, Inc and founded in 1962, evolved through various name changes and acquisitions to become the entity it is today. They specialize in providing data, internet, voice, and broadband transport services to carrier and enterprise customers.
Their expansive services are delivered over a nationwide network connecting 137 cities. Initially a microwave communication provider, the company rebranded to IXC Communications in 1994, and later merged with Cincinnati Bell in 1999, at which point it was renamed Broadwing.
This led to the formation of Broadwing Corporation which operated two main divisions: Broadwing Communications, LLC, focusing on telecommunications services, and Corvis Equipment Corporation, dedicated to the all-optical and electrical/optical communications systems design and manufacturing.
However, due to a downturn in the telecommunications industry, they refocused towards communications services which now accounts for approximately 99 percent of their revenue. In 2003, Broadwing was sold to Corvis, an equipment manufacturer which acquired Focal Communications in 2004.
This acquisition allowed for the integration of Focal's operations into Broadwing and subsequently prompted the rebranding of Corvis Corporation to Broadwing Corporation. Finally, in 2006, Broadwing Corporation announced it would be acquired by Level 3 Communications, with the acquisition finalized in early 2007.
Broadwing Communications manages an investment fund with a specific investment minimum and maximum set at $37,000,000, indicating they likely engage in strategic investments that align with their core operations in telecommunication services.
