What is Techqala?

Techqala is a unique hybrid incorporating elements of a startup accelerator, business innovation camp, and bonding experience. Established by UK-based service design and digital product company Unboxed in 2015, Techqala began in Cape Town with the aim to fuse local South African startups and international corporate innovators in a collaborative learning and creative thinking environment.

In 2021, for the first time, the program is set to run in the UK, in partnership with UKBlackTech, aiming to support and increase the visibility of diverse talent within the region. The week-long program is designed to take place over five consecutive days, consisting of structured morning activities followed by afternoons allocated for applying new insights directly to one’s business.

Participants then reconvene to share progress, gain further insights, and engage socially. Techqala’s curriculum is grounded in hands-on learning, agility, and frequent iteration, covering topics such as Design Thinking, Lean Startup, and Agile methodologies, enhanced by experienced business leaders sharing their narratives and expertise.

Despite potential adjustments due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with possibilities for remote participation through Zoom and Miro, the spirit of the accelerator remains focused on stimulating business growth and development. Techqala provides this transformative experience at no cost for selected entrepreneurs and small businesses, while representatives from larger organizations can attend for a fee.

The accelerator was conceived out of a passion to support purpose-driven startups and catalyze innovation within large and complex organizations. Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and corporate entities seeking new ideation methods in their operations constitute the target demographic.

The ultimate goal is to facilitate an environment of innovation, skills refinement, and idea exchange among brilliant minds from diverse backgrounds. Attendance does require a significant commitment of time, effort, and dedication.
