Badhouse Ventures is an early-stage nano venture capital firm that specializes in providing pre-seed and seed investments for software-focused startups, with particular emphasis on web marketplaces, SaaS, A.I., big data, blockchain, analytics, developer tools, future of work, and human resources. They are dedicated to fostering smarter communities and data systems. As former startup operators, they value hands-on involvement, offering strategic advice, operational assistance, and introductions along with writing the initial investment cheques. The firm demonstrates a strong preference for startups located in Western Canada, west of Toronto, aiming to address the prevalent Pre-Seed funding gap in the region. Badhouse Ventures asserts that the gap exists due to a shift in focus by seed investors towards startups that have already generated significant revenue or shown substantial market traction. They step in to fill this void by funding companies up to CAD 100,000, allowing founders to commit full-time to their venture and cover living expenses. Additionally, through partnerships, they provide perks such as cloud services credits, experienced mentorship, and various other in-kind services. Badhouse invests in ambitious, humble teams that have progressed past the idea stage with at least a rudimentary prototype, ideally a beta version of the product. Their initial investment interests revolve around solutions that enable smarter decision-making, personalization, privacy, security, and other similar areas, including technological accessibility and sustainability. Limiting their annual portfolio to no more than 10 startups ensures that they can offer substantial support to all founder teams. They aim for their investments to reach product/market fit quickly, with the goal of preparing for VC-led seed funding rounds in less than a year.
We invest in very early-stage software (SaaS, web3, etc.) startups solving problems that fall under two themes: smarter communities and/or smarter data systems. We have a strong Western Canada (West of Toronto) selection bias given the acute Pre-Seed funding/investment gap in this region compared to others.
