What Is EIC Pathfinder?

Founder winning EIC Pathfinder funding

EIC Pathfinder, part of the European Innovation Council, funds visionary, early-stage research (TRL 1–4) with the potential to create breakthrough, market-creating technologies. Grants are up to €4M, fully funded, and non-dilutive. It comes in two tracks: Pathfinder Open (any deep-tech field) and Pathfinder Challenges (specific topics set each year).

It's the entry point to the EIC pipeline: a successful Pathfinder project can progress to EIC Transition and then EIC Accelerator. UK companies are eligible as a Horizon Europe associated country. Our free check shows whether Pathfinder, and every other EU grant, fits your startup.

Who qualifies

EIC Pathfinder Eligibility

Pathfinder funds research consortia and, for some Challenges, single applicants. The bar on "breakthrough" is high.

Pathfinder Open needs a consortium of at least 3 independent partners from 3 different eligible countries. Some Challenges allow single-applicant proposals.

Early-stage, high-risk science (TRL 1–4) aiming at a genuine technological breakthrough, not incremental development.

UK companies are eligible as a Horizon Europe associated country; the lead in Open calls is usually from an EU member state.

A credible long-term vision with concrete preliminary evidence, plus a plan to translate results toward future innovation.

The Full Capital Stack

Grants Are Only Part of the Stack

EIC and Horizon Europe grants cover early-stage R&D, but most European startups need equity capital to scale. The strongest raises combine non-dilutive grants with angel or VC investment.
