What is European Bank for Reconstruction and Development?

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is a multilateral developmental investment bank established in 1991. Based in London, United Kingdom, its primary mandate includes the promotion of private and entrepreneurial initiatives in countries transitioning towards open and sustainable market economies.

With a focus on the private sector, the EBRD invests across various sectors, including infrastructure, agribusiness, energy, and more. They provide financing for projects in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, targeting areas that are less likely to attract direct financing from the private sector. The EBRD's financial products include loans, equity investments, loan syndication, and offering advisory services.

With an investment minimum and maximum both set at approximately 582.53 million euros, it enables the organization to make substantial contributions to the regions it serves. Following the upheaval of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the EBRD has increased its support for Ukraine, among other countries impacted by the conflict. They are also a climate finance leader, aiming to align with the Paris Agreement and transition towards green economic development.
