What is AMC Ventures Holding?

AMC Ventures Holding BV, also known as Amsterdam UMC Ventures Holding BV, is an investment firm established in 1995 to enable the Academic Medical Centre, now part of Amsterdam UMC, to create social and economic value from education and research without mixing public and private funds.

They engage in the commercialization of products derived from research at the Amsterdam UMC. This is achieved by establishing AMC spin-offs, which allows for the separation of public funding and private revenue streams, and aiming to generate returns through dividends or exits.

Through these spin-offs, Amsterdam UMC Ventures Holding actively encourages entrepreneurship, managing equity interests, and providing governance, finance control, management support, and advice. This includes also managing entities originated from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) through UvA Ventures Holding, and the University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam (HvA) through HvA Ventures Holding.

Their combined portfolio is divided into three categories: New Ventures, Contract Research, and Services. The New Ventures category is dedicated to companies that are part of the Amsterdam UMC Ventures portfolio.

The firm plays a significant role in guiding researchers and entrepreneurs in setting up companies based on scientific findings, especially in medical R&D, and advises them on business models in partnership with the Technology Transfer Office of Amsterdam UMC, IXA. They set up the legal, financial, and governance structures for these startups and help with the recruitment of team members possessing business development, financial modeling, and marketing skills.

Their portfolio companies are diverse and originate from the disciplines within Amsterdam UMC and they provide an outline of the startups to potential collaborators or interested parties.
