What is SmartCap?

SmartCap is an Estonia-based venture capital (VC) fund manager with a focus on fostering innovation and economic growth within the country.

Operating under three distinct funds, SmartCap aims to modernize and expand the Estonian economy through strategic investments in emerging companies and funds. Their Venture Capital Fund is dedicated to invigorating the local capital market by investing in VC funds that have a significant impact on the Estonian VC ecosystem.

This fund prioritizes investments in startups from pre-seed to scale-up stages, with a perpetual investment period and boasts a net value of approximately 176 million euros. Moving to the field of sustainability, the SmartCap Green Fund supports early-stage Estonian Greentech innovators. This fund operates both as a fund-of-funds and a direct investor, targeting sectors like energy, agriculture, food, transport, and environmental technologies, reflecting Estonia's 2035 goals.

With a fund size of 100 million euros, their investments range from seed to growth stages, influencing the development of sustainable innovations through 2026. Lastly, the SmartCap Defence Fund advances Estonia's defence industry, focusing on innovative technologies and securing the nation's safety.

They selectively back companies and funds related to military and dual-use products and technologies that align with Estonia's interests and those of NATO member states. With another 100 million euros at its disposal, the Defence Fund also supports seed to growth-stage ventures and private funds dedicated to defence.

Overall, SmartCap aims to create a tangible economic impact, fostering a local ecosystem where its 117 portfolio companies have generated 1.32 billion euros in revenue, created over 3200 jobs, and contributed 70 million euros in tax income.
