Business Development Sales Professional / Consultant
Financial architect of everything finance.
Linked In Description:
He has 10+ years experience in the financial industry specializing in business development and sales. Starting out at the Pacific Stock Exchange in LA as an electronic floor broker, he then went upstairs creating a new division for off exchange executions. Eventually his group executed billions of shares per day led to OES Market Group getting bought out by Merrill Lynch.
Later, he moved into the retail side as a financial advisor at Treveri Capital for individuals, managing risk, and creating liquidity for executives of pre-IPO private companies. He likes all inefficient markets that need disruption. He is also scaling Oxford BioChronometrics which passively authenticates a user based on user behavior which is gaining speed in the fake adtech market.
Being a visionary, he is interested in disruptive technologies such as fintech, adtech and cyber security.
For fun he created LA Fintech and LA Ad Pros networking groups with 5,000+ members.
Head of Bloomberg Beta, a new thing. Chairman of OUYA, also new :)
Linked In Description:
Obsessed with how we make work -- the thing we do with more waking hours than any other -- better.
To do that, I prioritize job one: husband (2007 - Present) and father (2008 - Present, promoted to father of two in 2011).
I tried writing my LinkedIn to be honest to both my successes and the other stuff -- so you can understand me better than the camera only showed my good side. If that means you'd rather not work with me, let's be grateful we learned that now! (The only important thing that hit the cutting room floor is the long list of side projects half started, started and abandoned, or started only in my imagination.)
I've had a messy, hand-wringy career (in non-profit, professional services, city government, big media, video games, academia, day-zero startup, investing), where I was never hired for any job for which I was qualified (including starting a company, where I guess I sort of co-hired myself and was still unqualified). Only later did I realize the one thread that tied it all together -- making work better.
In 2013, Bloomberg L.P. gave me the opportunity to turn my obsession with the future of work into my job when we created Bloomberg Beta. I believe the fastest way to make change is to build extraordinary technology companies (and, these days, machine intelligence companies in particular).
To keep learning, I teach a course in media at Berkeley's Haas School of Business, and serve on the boards of a non-profit (the Center for Investigative Reporting).
If you've read to this point (thank you!), and want to connect on LinkedIn, I usually use connections on LinkedIn for references -- so if we have yet to interact, better to just email me. (roy at bloombergbeta dot com)
And last: I type 88 wpm. I play Werewolf. Never at the same time. Yet. I'm unsure if I know enough to give, or even believe in, advice, if you're tempted to ask for any.

Dr. Georges Harik serves as Advisor at GV. He is one of Google's first 10 employees, held the roles of director of Googlettes and distinguished engineer. As director of Googlettes, his team was responsible for the product management and strategy efforts surrounding many nascent Google initiatives including Gmail, Google Talk, Google Video, Picasa, Orkut, Google Groups and Google Mobile. As a distinguished engineer, Georges was the co-developer of the targeting technology behind AdSense, the first engineering manager of the Google Search Appliance, and the co-author of the original product plan for the AdWords Online system. Georges has also contributed to numerous patents covering Google's search engine and advertising networks and served several years as one of three members Google's initial engineering hiring committee, which oversaw the hiring of Google's first few hundred engineers. Georges' technical background is in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Prior to his work life, Georges received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he focused on mathematical models of genetic algorithms, programs that evolve to solve problems, that are inspired by natural processes. While at the University of Illinois as a research associate, Georges co-invented the first highly accurate technique for estimating the time complexity of genetic algorithms, published in the paper "The Gambler's Ruin Problem, Genetic Algorithms, and the Sizing of Populations." Subsequently, Georges published one of the seminal papers in the field of optimization using probabilistic modeling "Linkage Learning via Probabilistic Modeling in the ECGA". He then worked at SGI, as a developer of MineSet, a data mining product. At Google, Georges was a co-inventor and co-developer of two very large scale parallel machine learning programs that are used in numerous systems such as AdSense targeting and the spam filter in Gmail. Georges is currently an angel investor and an advisor to various startups focusing on the areas of internet applications, machine learning, advertising technologies and biotechnology. He is also a founder of imo.im and a co-founder of www.hslabs.org, an open source artificial intelligence research lab.
